What are Chemical peels?

Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments that work by applying a chemical solution to the skin's surface, which causes the outer layers of the skin to peel off. This process stimulates skin renewal and can lead to various skin benefits, depending on the type and strength of the peel used. Chemical peels are commonly used to address skin issues like fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin tone, acne scars, and skin texture problems.

How does Chemical peels work?

  • Exfoliation: Chemical peels use different types of acids or other active ingredients to exfoliate the top layer of the skin. This layer, known as the epidermis, often contains dead skin cells, imperfections, and irregularities. By removing this layer, chemical peels can reveal fresh, healthier skin underneath.

  • Stimulation of skin regeneration: The exfoliation triggered by the chemical peel prompts the skin to produce new cells to replace the removed ones. This stimulates collagen production, which is crucial for skin's firmness and elasticity.

  • Type and depth of peel: The effectiveness and depth of a chemical peel depend on the type of chemical solution used and its strength.

What kind of types are they among chemical peels?

There are three main types of chemical peels:

  1. Superficial peels: These peels use mild acids to target the outermost layer of the epidermis. They provide a gentle exfoliation and can improve skin texture and tone.

  2. Medium peels: Medium-depth peels use stronger acids like glycolic acid to penetrate deeper into the skin. They can address more moderate skin concerns like fine lines, pigmentation issues, and acne scars.

  3. Deep peels: Deep peels, typically using phenol, are the most aggressive and penetrate deep into the skin. They can effectively treat severe skin damage, including deep wrinkles and extensive sun damage. These require significant recovery time and may not be suitable for all skin types.

Results and recovery:

The degree of peeling, recovery time, and results vary depending on the peel's depth. Superficial peels usually have minimal downtime, while deeper peels may require more extensive recovery. After a chemical peel, the skin may be more sensitive to the sun, so it's crucial to use sunscreen and follow post-treatment care instructions.
